It’s not easy to tell a documentary from a false documentary, and inventing a character is not that different from describing it. This is the case of Guillermo Gaede, a government employee turned musician, engineer, spy employed by five countries, and a dissident theoretical physic whose extraordinary life is beyond the reach of any possible interpretation. So much so that spectators leaving the theater will run up to Google to check if they’re among the many deceived people featured in the film. Because if the film is a fiction, it seems to be based on true events, but if it’s a documentary, it looks like it’s supported on a fantasy –which may be imagined by the character, or the filmmakers, or the audience. If the film has a message, it’s that letting yourself be deceived is a universal calling that affects both filmgoers and professional spies. Reciprocally, The Crazy Che demonstrates that innocence is the most powerful weapon of manipulation. The world is an incomprehensible place, and this is the proof. Q
